You will also get to know about the schooling needed to become a paralegal and the salary and outlook for the occupation.

Before you take the first step in venturing into your new career, it will help you to first understand the requirements and the timing involved in how to become a paralegal.

Once you can understand the possible paths for becoming a paralegal, you will customize an approach for yourself, setting realistic and attainable goals along the way.

What is a Paralegal?

Paralegals play an essential role in the legal system by completing necessary standard tasks to ensure quality legal services to clients with legal needs.

Paralegals are responsible for a broad range of critical legal activities and work on many of the same tasks as attorneys except for giving legal representation to clients or providing legal advice.

Due to the versatile nature of the US legal system and the constant need for legal services by citizens and businesses, working as a paralegal can be an exciting and promising career.

There is a high demand for paralegals; jobs are expected to grow by 18% for paralegals and legal assistants in the decade from 2010 to 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This article provides a launchpad for individuals interested in getting started as a paralegal with information on getting started as a paralegal.

How to Become a Paralegal

A job as a paralegal might be perfect for those who appreciate the intricacy of their countries legal system and are eager to assist lawyers. Experts on this profession say it can be a promising occupation for individuals who are detail-oriented and enjoy writing.

Reading comprehension and written communication are significant skills to cultivate for success as a paralegal; paralegals do a significant volume of writing, so someone more confident in their public speaking abilities than their writing skills might opt for a different occupation.

So, if you’re a broad brush type person, it’s probably not a perfect profession for you because it involves a lot of detail work, and attention to detail is extremely important.

The first and foremost step in becoming a paralegal is to find an accredited paralegal program; there are three various types of academic credentials that someone can use to enter the paralegal profession:

Associate degrees

Bachelor’s degrees

Post-baccalaureate certificates.

It takes two years to get an associate degree in paralegal studies and about twice as long to earn a bachelor’s degree in the discipline.

Post-baccalaureate certificates are an option only for college graduates and can be obtained within one year; future paralegals have the flexibility to choose what type of credential is most suitable.

One advantage of the paralegal profession is that a lot of job opportunities are available for those who only choose to pursue a two-year degree.

Quite often at a community college, where the cost of education is relatively inexpensive, while some of the top-paying positions require a four-year degree, one can make a good living as a paralegal with a two-year degree.

5 Steps for Becoming a Paralegal

1. Choose a path to become a paralegal

Once you’ve made up your mind that becoming a paralegal is right for you, you can begin to look at the various paths for how to become a paralegal. For most, becoming a paralegal starts with education.

Employers always prefer candidates who have formal education, especially in states where paralegal certification is required. National paralegal certification programs that are voluntary also tend to set minimum education guidelines.

However, some employers require no form of education and may provide training or internship programs to get a person started in the paralegal field.

To choose the best for you, it is essential to understand the possibilities and the cost and time involved for each, and then to weigh that information against what is needed of the specific law firms you are targeting.

2. Explore the options for earning a paralegal degree

While not required, it is becoming more and more common for up and coming paralegals to get an educational background in the subject before applying for jobs, and this tends to make applicants more suitable to employers.

Some employers look for a prospective paralegal to have finished a certificate program in paralegal studies. Others require the candidate to have an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree in the course.

Some even opt for paralegals to have a master’s degree in paralegal studies. The necessary educational paths for becoming a paralegal include:

Paralegal Certificate Degrees

Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies

Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies

Online Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies

Master’s Degree in Paralegal Studies

Earning a paralegal degree completely takes both time and financial commitments. For those who have no previous college experience/background, an associate’s degree can be achieved in about two years with full-time study.

A bachelor’s degree provides a more enhanced background but typically takes four years to complete. Candidates who have initially earned a degree may wish to consider a paralegal certificate program. The time limit for completing a certificate program varies but generally falls between 10 and 18 months.

Any of these paralegal degree options can help candidates become more competitive in the paralegal job market and also help candidates become qualified for certification, which is covered in more detail below.

3. Consider other paths to a paralegal career

Though having a paralegal degree is recommended, many employers do not require candidates to have a particular background or education in paralegal studies to be hired in a paralegal position. However, up and coming paralegals should be aware that employer requirements tend to vary by geographic area.

Employers in urban regions like New York and Chicago, for example, often set a higher bar/standard for entry-level positions and may expect candidates to have a degree combined with some work experience. Employers in more rural areas may have less complicated requirements.

At the same time, those people with a strong work ethic and skillset may be able to break into a paralegal career without previous experience. Other paths to becoming a paralegal include:

On-the-job training: Some law firms may hire entry-level paralegals with no experience or education in paralegal studies, training them once they are hired.

New employees like these usually have a bachelor’s degree in another field. Still, others may not have a degree at all but may have helpful technical experience in another area of criminal justice.

Work your way up: Another way to become a paralegal is to start in a law firm as an office assistant, legal secretary, or document preparer. Once you become conversant with the terminology and basics of law through exposure, it may be easier to become a paralegal with that law firm.

Internships: Some up and coming paralegals participate in internship programs, often organized through a paralegal certificate program. As someone doing an internship, a candidate will gain practical experience and legal knowledge, which may help them be hired in a full-time role later.

Volunteer work: Though less common than other paths to becoming a paralegal, there are many organizations that welcome volunteer legal assistants.

Having volunteer experience can help candidates get a foot in the door with paralegal employers. Organizations to research include mediation services providers and Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) programs.

Whether or not to go after an educational path to become a paralegal is entirely up to the individual. A degree in paralegal studies will not hinder your ability to be hired as a paralegal. Still, this advantage also must be weighed against the cost and time associated with such a degree.

4. Apply for national certification

The National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), NALS, the Association for Legal Professionals, and the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) offer paralegals the opportunity to embark on voluntary examinations to test their knowledge of the law and the skills required in the field.

Each organization provides its examinations, but each test provides employers and others with an objective standard to evaluate a paralegal.

Passing a paralegal certification exam offers you an avenue to stand out from other people calling themselves paralegals with documentation proving that you gave an objective test as well as a qualification that you can use as part of your professional title.

The NFPA provides the Paralegal CORE Competency Exam (PCCE) for entry-level paralegals and the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE) for more experienced paralegals. Those who pass the PCCE can refer to themselves as CORE Registered Paralegals (CRPs).

Recording a success on the PACE leads to Registered Paralegal (RP) certification. The least qualification to take the PCCE with no prior legal work experience is an associate’s degree in paralegal studies.

To be qualified to take the PACE for paralegal certification, candidates must have an acceptable combination of education and experience. You can read more about the eligibility requirements for these exams on the NFPA’s website.

NALS, the Association for Legal Professionals, provides three pathways to paralegal certification. The Accredited Legal Professional (ALP) certification exam is available for students and early career paralegals who have either completed an accredited business/ legal course or have one year of experience.

The Professional Legal Secretary (PLS) and Certified Legal Professional (CLP) qualification is also earned by examination. PLS/ CLP exam candidates must undoubtedly have at least three years of legal work experience, two years of legal expertise plus formal education, or another acceptable credential (such as previous ALP certification), to qualify to sit for the exam.

Lastly, the exam for Professional Paralegal (PP) certification is designed for those who have earned a formal education in paralegal studies (at least an associate’s degree from an accredited program with a least 15 credit hours in substantive law), or who qualify through a combination of education and experience. Detailed qualification criteria are available on the NALS website.

NALA, the National Association of Legal Assistants, also provides certification through its CP Certified Paralegal program for entry-level professionals and its Advanced Paralegal Certification (APC) program for experienced professionals.

Becoming successful on the CP certification exam earns candidates the right to designate themselves Certified Paralegals (CPs) while passing one or more of the APC online courses leads to the Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP) credential.

Applicants for the Certified Paralegal program must have at least an associate’s degree in paralegal studies if they have no legal work experience.

Candidates may chase after certification through more than one organization. However, it should be recorded that employers in some geographic regions may prefer the certification standard of one organization over the others.

It is wise to research the norm in your area by looking at current employment listings or referring to your local paralegal associations before committing to a certification program.

5. Earn state-level paralegal certification, if it’s available in your state

Most states do not need or regulate paralegal certification to work as a paralegal. However, some cities such as California, Montana, and South Dakota have set statewide education and experience requirements for those who wish to work as paralegals.

A town like Arizona has a Legal Document Preparer certification requirement for those who prepare legal documents without an attorney’s supervision.

Some states with voluntary certification programs (aside from national examinations) as of 2015 include Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington (Spokane County).

These voluntary certification programs are majorly administered through the state bar association or local paralegal associations.

Though they are not involuntary, in states where they are available, these programs tend to be the norm for paralegals – meaning candidates should strongly consider their options for meeting the certification needed before embarking on a paralegal career.

Plus, some state bar associations have recommended that employers only hire paralegals qualified by education and experience.

How a Paralegal’s Job Differs From a Lawyer’s

A paralegal’s responsibilities vary depending on how much work is assigned to him or her by the attorney for whom he or she works.

However, in general, a paralegal will write correspondence and documents that a supervising attorney can look over, modify it if necessary, and sign off on.

Paralegals are most times responsible for organizing and updating files on various legal clients. They may work to obtain affidavits and other formal statements submitted as evidence in court cases.

They may also handle scheduling for a legal office and act as a middle man between lawyers and their clients and track deadlines and ensure that they are met.

Bita Goldman, the global general counsel for Unidays Inc. – a mobile app that allows students to discover and reap savings from various brands – has hired and worked with paralegals throughout her career and wrote in a message that paralegals “are the operational brain box of the legal department.

They support attorneys by doing legal research, preparing briefs, and organizing everything needed for trials.”

Nevertheless, there are limits on what a paralegal can do within the legal profession since paralegals are not lawyers and are not licensed to practice law.

There are minor things that paralegals can’t do that only lawyers can do … Paralegals cannot represent clients in court or depositions, “Only a lawyer can be the advocate in that setting. Paralegals can’t enter into representation agreements or set fees with clients. Only lawyers can do that.

And most importantly, a paralegal can’t give legal advice. Only lawyers can. Now what paralegals do is they can come in contact with the clients, and they can gather information, but they can’t give opinions.”

Another primary differentiation between paralegals and lawyers is that lawyers have more decision-making authority and more leeway to use their discretion.

Paralegal Duties and Responsibilities

Not all paralegals assume the same duties. It depends wholly on who they work for and what kind of legal services their employer provides. Some responsibilities are typical, however:

Arranging fair talk or expert psychological evaluations in family law divorce and custody matters

Contributing to trial preparation in litigation practices

Making available behind-the-scenes support in the courtroom at hearings and trials, or in arbitration, mediation, administrative proceedings, and closings

Drafting legal documents and pleadings, including deposition notices, subpoenas, motions, certifications, contracts, briefs, and complaints

Finding out the facts of a case by interviewing clients and witnesses and performing legal research into case law and precedents

Being in charge of discovery — the exchange of certain information between opposing parties to a lawsuit

Organizing and managing files, documents, and exhibits

Filing documents with federal and state courts

Although what a paralegal can’t do is established by law, what they can do is highly dependent on their employers. Some attorneys find delegating tasks more comfortable than others do.

A paralegal’s prime purpose is to free up attorneys’ time so the attorneys can do those things only lawyers can do, like give advice to the clients and appear in court.

How Much Do Paralegals Earn? | Paralegal Salary

Paralegal salaries can be affected by so many factors, including education, experience, practice environment, and geographic location. Those who work for the federal government tend to be the most highly compensated.

Median Annual Salary: $50,940 ($24.49/hour)

Top 10% Annual Salary: More than $82,050 ($39.45/hour)

Bottom 10% Annual Salary: Less than $31,400 ($15.10/hour)

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018

Paralegals who work for firms located in metropolitan regions typically earn more than those who work in smaller cities and more rural locations.

Some paralegals with experience and special skills or management duties can accumulate in the six figures annually in large cities. In contrast, entry-level paralegals in rural areas might earn in the neighborhood of $25,000 a year.

Paralegal Education, Training, and Certification

Some paralegals possess no formal training. They get experience on the job under the supervision of attorneys, often assuming the position of paralegal and additional responsibilities after serving as a legal secretary or in another supporting role for some time. This isn’t always the case, however.

Education

Many paralegals process two-year associate degrees or four-year bachelor’s degrees. Many junior colleges provide courses toward a paralegal certificate.

Training

Even if they don’t gain it in a classroom setting, paralegals must have a solid knowledge of legal terminology, federal and state rules of legal procedure, and substantive law.

Paralegals can get this knowledge by working their way up from an entry-level position with a law firm or other legal services.

Certification

This discipline is not highly regulated, so having a professional certification can help a job candidate stand out from other applicants.

Licensing

Very limited states have licensing or registration requirements for paralegals.

Paralegals with bachelor’s degrees in paralegal studies, or a college degree in any field combined with a paralegal certificate, generally have the best career prospects.

Read Also: Waffle House Franchise Cost

Paralegal Skills and Competencies

Not everyone has what it takes of being a paralegal. Some skills and behaviors can make all the difference between success and burning out.

Organizational skills: Paralegals must have excellent organizational skills to manage large files and exhibits, which can number in the hundreds for a single case.

Communication skills: Paralegals must communicate regularly with clients, experts, court personnel, and attorneys other than their employers.

Strong research and writing skills: These skills are essential for drafting pleadings, research memorandums, correspondence, and other documents.

Nerves of steel: An ability to make do with pressure and looming deadlines can be crucial in some specialties that involve a great deal of litigation.

An ability to multitask: This is a deadline-heavy profession, and more than one case can demand action within the same limited periods. You might have to perform different tasks on more than one case file almost simultaneously, taking a phone call on one matter while sorting through trial exhibits on another — and making mistakes because you’re overwhelmed or distracted is not an option.

Paralegal Job Outlook

An increment in caseloads has encouraged lawyers to delegate tasks formerly reserved for attorneys, creating more opportunities for paralegals.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that paralegal positions will increase by 15 percent from 2016 through 2026, which is much faster than average.

This job increase can be partially attributed to the fact that attorneys can pass off more work to their paralegals at a lower hourly rate than they would individually charge for their time as clients resist high legal fees.

Work Environment

Paralegals always work in tandem with other personnel, such as attorneys and support staff, so being a paralegal is something of a people profession. Client communication is also very common in some regions of the law.

The vast majority of this work is done in offices. Still, paralegals can seldom be called upon to attend court proceedings with their attorney employers or to travel for other aims, such as to file documents or gather information.

Work Schedule

Being a paralegal is widely a full-time position performed during regular business hours. Still, overtime and evening hours are often necessary when deadlines loom, and trials are imminent, requiring extensive preparation.

After going through this article, you shouldn’t have a problem or become confused again on whether paralegal is a suitable profession in general and whether it is also suitable for you personally.

The article highlighted all the necessary information you need to know on how to become a paralegal effectively and become successful in the paralegal profession.

Thus, your dream to study in Canada as an international student can be as easy as deciding where to get a study visa and travel to Canada.

Canada has some of the best colleges around the world and very accommodating to immigrants. Also, the cost of living in the country is fairly reasonable, which is why the country hosts thousands of international students every year.

In this post, we were able to expose you to the best colleges in Canada for International Students. Beyond that, we went further to show you how to find them, factors to consider, the cost of studying in Canada, and how to apply when you find one.

Why study in Canada?

First, Canada, as one of the best destination countries for quality and affordable education, has become a booming hub for international students. Statistics by Times Higher Education’s World University ranked Canada as one of the top ten places to study in the world.

The Canadian government and the educational system as a whole place great importance on learning and standards in education. That said, there are over 100 colleges in Canada.

However, this post discussed the best colleges in Canada for international students who seek to complete their college degree abroad.

Read Also: How to Easily Migrate To Canada

How to Find the Best School to Study in Canada

To find the best school to study in Canada, there are varieties of things to look out for. It might be easy, but choosing the right Canadian post-secondary institution to complete your studies can be one of the most critical decisions.

One fact to hold onto – the choice you make on a potential university or college could impact your academic success, employment prospects, and your career pathway. To help you figure out the best Canadian college to study is why this part of the post exists.

Use the School Search Website to find the Best Colleges in Canada

The School Search website provides a regularly updated database with over 160 designated learning institution profiles for you to browse through and get familiar with. You can visit SchoolSearch.com.

Get Started with School Search

Using the School Search is easy. You can use the simple search bar to look for a Canadian college or university by name, province, city, or field of study.

For example, if you are interested in finding the best engineering schools in Canada, you can enter the term engineering in the search bar or use the present filters to select a program from the drop-down menu.

It is also possible to browse all institutions or focus on only universities or colleges separately. By using the filters below the search bar, you can tailor your searches even further.

Information of Colleges Shown by School Search

Each profile page features information about the institution to help you get an understanding of that the school has to offer, including:

Average tuition costs for international students;

Average GPA requirement;

Insights on student life and the experience of studying at the institution;

Services for international students;

Popular study programs at the school;

Reviews about the school.

How Do I Choose The Right College For Me?

Whatever factors go into the decision, many high school students already have an idea of what they want to study, and where.

But it’s important to research institutions thoroughly before committing, says Robert Astroff of Toronto-based Astroff Consultants “Often people are driven by the reputation of a school, but it’s not a fit for everyone,” he says.

As such, where and what you study, and whom you meet at school will have a far-reaching influence on your future. Here are some factors to consider.

Program availability– What courses do they offer?

School –for example, university, college, vocational school, or institute

Type of degree –for example, certificate, diploma, or degree

Location –Which province or state is the college sited.

College Population –Size of school and how many students are usually in a class

The reputation of the school and job placement rate of graduates.

Quality of facilities and resources –for example, libraries and technical equipment

Opportunities for work experience –for example, is there a cooperative program?

Fees and financial aid options –for example, scholarships and grants.

Admissions requirements –eligibility, documents required

Faculty –

Language –What language is primary, although, Canadians speak to major languages; English and French.

Ability to accommodate special needs –for example, access to equipment for students with physical disabilities, special arrangements for students with learning disabilities.

Recreational and other activities –for example, sports, clubs or school newspaper.

How To Move To Canada As A Skilled Worker

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is specifically designed for individuals who are selected to immigrate to Canada due to their skills and work experience.

It’s worth noting that as of 1st January 2015, candidates for the FSW Program will be chosen to apply via the Express Entry System.

That said, let’s now look at how to move to Canada as a skilled worker. But before that, you need to check if you’re eligible for the program.

Are You Eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker Program?

Before you can apply for the federal skilled worker program, you must satisfy any of the following:

Already have a job offer

Be eligible to work in Canada

Can prove that you have enough money to support yourself when you get to Canada; and have a minimum of 1 year, full-time skilled work experience; have a post-secondary certificate, degree, or diploma; meet the minimum language levels in either English or French; plan to live outside the Quebec province.

If you meet any of the requirements above, then you’re fully eligible to apply for the FSW program.

What Kind Of Work Experience Do I Need?

You must have either Skill Type 0, Skill Level A, or Skill Level B work experience on the Canadian National Occupational Classification (NOC).

Additionally, your work experience must be either full-time, paid, or the equivalent hours part-time. By full-time, it means you must have worked at least 30 hours per week. You must have gotten such work experience within the past 10 years.

NOTE: These limits do not apply to you if you have a permanent job offer.

The FSW Point System

Before you can apply as an FSW, you need a minimum of 67 points. You get different points based on:

Your abilities in English and/or French (Canada’s 2 official languages)

Your education

Your age

Your work experiences

Your adaptability

If you have arranged employment in Canada

Visit the Six Selection Factors page to see the breakdown of your skilled worker points and know if you qualify.

Again, it’s worth noting that the Federal Skilled Worker point system differs from Express Entry points.

How to Apply As a Federal Skilled Worker

You will have to submit your profile to Express Entry if you are eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) category.
Best Format for a Financial Analyst Resume

Every financial analyst resume should be kept short and brief.

In fact:

According to HR Statistics Report, the average time it takes a hiring manager to quickly go through a resume is about 7 seconds… And within this short period of time, you must be able to sell your best features to them.

The reverse chronological resume format is one of the best formats to choose from in structuring your financial analyst resume sample.

WHY?

This’s because it gets your points quicker to hiring managers.

Also, when structuring your financial analyst resume, stick with one type of eye-friendly font, easy-to-parse headings, and strategically implementing the use of white spaces.

Here are some very good financial analyst examples:

How to Write the Perfect Financial Analyst Resume with Examples

Having the required qualifications and experiences is one thing to getting a job position as a financial analyst, being able to present it in an appealing way to recruiters through your resume is an entirely different thing.

Now imagine this, you are a recruiter at an organization, you have received over 500 emails applying for the financial analyst job opening your company just posted, and you have to select the best candidates for an interview.

You aren’t going to spend all your time going through every individual resume, you’re going to have to scan through and probably pick the most organized, brief, promising-looking resumes to review.

This is why you need to follow the tips I will be outlining for you so your financial analyst resume sample can be among the few selected lucky resumes.

The first thing to consider when putting together the perfect financial analyst resume is your summary.

It is oftentimes what the recruiter looks at to get a general overview of what is contained in your resume; it is a very important part of your resume.

Your summary should be only a few sentences long, stating some of your qualifications and goals. Remember, do not use pronouns.

Read Also: IT Project Manager Resume Samples

For example:

DON’T DO THIS –

“Financial Analyst with 5 years of working experience, looking for a position in XYZ company. I have proven skills in pricing, cost analysis, and budgeting.”

This financial resume summary example is too generic.

Instead…

DO THIS –

Chartered Financial Analyst with more than 5 years of working experience, longing to leverage proven cost, revenue, and budget maximization skills for XYZ-company. Saved ABC-company $3.5million by identifying low-margin projects, and grew customer retention by 30%.

The achievements part is your opportunity to show the recruiter just how awesome you are.

When talking about your experience with other companies, avoid listing your day to day activities. Instead, focus on mentioning the achievements and value you added to your previous employer.

For example, instead of saying, “Data management and storage” you can say something like, “Implemented data management procedures that improved operational efficiency of the company by 10%”.

By doing this you, make the hiring manager realize that you can also add such values or even more to his or her company.

Employers search for people who have been successful in similar roles and can add value to their company. Mention only achievements and experiences that are relevant to the job you are applying for or that showcase skills relevant to the job.

Some important skills you shouldn’t forget to list out in your financial analyst resume are:

Top Financial Analyst Hard Skills…

Big data analytics

Financial modeling

Cost accounting

Financial software applications

Microsoft excel

Microsoft access

SQL

Budgeting

IFRS

Risk management

Project Management

Statistical Analysis

Quality management

Data Validation

SAP

Mathematics

Asset Management

Trend Analysis

Some Top Financial Analyst Soft Skills:

Presentation

Communication

Problem-solving

Time management

Leadership and planning’

Teamwork

Interpersonal skill

Strategic thinking

Accuracy

Multitasking

Professionalism

Enthusiasm

Input the skills you possess (with certifications if any) into your resume. To avoid making your financial analyst resume sample too lengthy, mention only skills relevant to the job you are applying for.

Having a Linkedin profile or digital portfolio is an added advantage; you can add it to your contact information along with your email address, phone number, and city name.

Putting your full address is old fashion as recruiters rarely send you an invitation for an interview by snail mail these days.

Read Also: Business Development Resume Samples

What to Avoid When Preparing a Financial Analyst Resume

One of the major things you should avoid when preparing your financial analyst resume is LYING!

The majority of companies perform background checks on the information you have given to them, lying on your resume will definitely ruin your chances of getting employed.

You should also avoid making your resume too lengthy, a long resume will overwhelm the hiring manager or recruiter and make them skip some important information and details contained in the resume.

Focus on stating only relevant information. Normally, a resume should be one or two pages except in situations where it is stated otherwise.

Avoid having a disorganized resume too; This is why we advise that you stick with a PDF financial analyst resume format, except otherwise stated.

This can be a big turnoff for most hiring managers and recruiters and may hinder your resume from even making it past the first stage of screening.

Finally, make proper use of headings and bullets to state your points.

Starbucks Corporation is an American coffee company and one of the largest coffeehouse chains in the world.

It was founded by Jerry Baldin, Gordon Bowker and Zev Siegel in 1971, opening its first store across the street from the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington.

Starbucks was named after the first mate in Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick.

In terms of who owns Starbucks?

Howard Schultz can be tagged as the person who owns Starbucks as he is the largest shareholder of the company.

Schultz joined the Starbucks Coffee Company in 1982 working as the director of retail and marketing.

He left Starbucks briefly to form his own coffee company, the II Giornale Coffee Company, but returned back in August 1987 but this time with a team of investors.

Howard Schultz purchased all of Starbucks Coffee Company’s assets and became the company’s chief executive officer, but at the end of 2016, he announced that he would be turning over the CEO role to Kevin Johnson.

Schultz still owns 33 million shares directly in the company and another 1.7 million shares indirectly through trusts.

He grew the company’s sales up to $5 billion.

Kevin Johnson took over from Schultz in 2017 and continues to serve as the firm’s CEO till date.

As the largest coffeehouse in the world, Starbucks targets majorly quality-minded coffee drinkers, making their coffees using automatic espresso machines for efficiency.

The company currently operates 30,000 locations in over 77 countries worldwide, serving both hot and cold drinks, whole-bean and micro-ground instant coffee known as VIA.

Starbucks also serves caffe lattes, full- and loose leaf teas including Teavana tea products, espressos, Frappuccino beverages, Evolution Fresh juices, La Boulange pastries, and snacks such as chips and crackers, and many more.

Read Also: Little Caesers Franchise Cost

Is Starbucks A Franchise?

No!

Starbucks is NOT a franchise.

Despite having more than 24,000 locations worldwide, the company has refused to offer franchising to its standalone stores.

Howard Schultz once said in an interview and I quote:

We believed very early on that people’s interaction with the Starbucks experience was going to determine the success of the brand.

The culture and values of how we related to our customers, which is reflected in how the company relates to our employees, would determine our success. And we thought the best way to have those kinds of universal values was to build around company-owned stores and then to provide stock options to every employee, to give them a financial and psychological stake in the company.

So, if you have plans of opening up a Starbuck franchise, you may have to reconsider because the company does not offer franchising to individuals.

This means that the company offers a variety of other opportunities for established businesses to sell Starbucks products at their existing locations.

However, in situations in which a master concessionaire or if you can provide improved access to desirable retail space (such as an airport or a train station) or other company controls, the company may consider licensing its operations to such a company.

But there is still a high possibility of having your shop licensed, which means it is still owned by Starbucks.

Starbucks Franchise Fees | How to Get Started

Before we talk about Starbucks franchise fees and how to open one, there are a few things to note.

The Starbucks company will first determine if the existing business in question is a good fit for any of their programs… And if they are, they get granted permission to offer Starbucks products in their respective stores.

It’s also important to note that owning a licensed Starbucks shop means that your store is owned by Starbucks.

The Starbucks Coffee Company currently has no plans to franchise yet.

Starbucks licensing agreements help store owners with many of the aspects of the regular running of their business as in a traditional franchise agreement, including things like store design, the Starbucks menu, equipment, food, training and support, promotions, and onsite visits.

Starbucks doesn’t really have a standard criterion available for selecting candidates for a licensed store, but business owners can visit the Starbucks Branded Solutions website to get started and send an inquiry.

You will be required to create an account on the website first before you will be allowed to apply for a Starbucks licensed store.

Once registered, sign in to your dashboard.

Next, click on the drop-down menu that follows the instruction to Select Your Business Type.

Proceed to choose the business that most closely resembles your existing business type to begin the application for your license.

Once you are done filling out the form that pops out, click the submit button at the bottom.

You will then be contacted by a Starbucks representative within a few days who will determine whether or not your business is really a good fit for the Starbucks brand.

Starbucks has been expanding outside of North America since 1996. Today the company operates in at least 62 countries worldwide, with approximately 12,000 stores located outside of the United States.

It might also interest you to know that a new Starbucks store opens approximately every 15 hours in China, according CNBC.

There are already 3000 Starbucks stores currently operating in China, and there are plans to add to this by 2000 in 2021.

Starbucks is also looking to expand its presence in India where it already owns 75 high-performing stores, and which is expected to be a fertile ground for the company’s specialty tea brand – Teavana.

Starbucks is estimated to have over 10,000 stores worldwide – 4,400 of them are licensed.

How Much Does a Starbucks Store Make a Year?

According to Statista:

Starbucks generated over 26.5 billion U.S. dollars in total revenue in 2019 – a seven percent (7%) increase over the past twelve months.

The stat also shows that the revenue of Starbucks worldwide from 2003 to 2019 amounted to approximately 237.35 U.S dollars.

Now, asking the question of how much a Starbuck store makes a year…

Unfortunately, the company does not disclose this kind of information to the public – it is against their policy. But as a public company, they are required to make a report of their annual revenue so that investors will see a reason to invest with them.

Starbucks does not disclose how much each of its stores makes yearly, but from analysis of their annual revenue, we can get a rough estimate of how much each store makes yearly.

How to Start a Starbucks Franchise?

Franchising is a way to help stores to grow, but Starbucks prefers licensing to maintain better control over stores and product quality.

However, if you are looking to pay for a Starbuck license store, the cost is estimated at $315,000.

Now, a few may be wondering:

Is a Franchise a Good Investment?

These days, almost everybody wants to quit their 9-5 jobs in anticipation of being their own boss… And franchising seems to be one of the ways out!

Recently, the economic track record for franchises has been so solid.

In fact:

The average annual job growth of franchises over the past 5 years has grown by 2.6%, nearly 20% higher than other business types – IFA.

With the right mindset, knowledge and discipline, venturing into a franchise is bound to yield good fruits.

Starbucks Franchise Alternatives

There are definitely other franchising options than Starbucks…

For more than forty years now, the franchise industry has been going strong and more competitive than ever.

In fact:

Entrepreneur recently published its 2020 Franchise 500 Ranking, listing the investment cost range for each of the 500 most popular franchises.

As you can see, the process is not entirely difficult once you meet up with their requirements, and it’s very profitable. Just follow the steps above and don’t forget to let us know if you have questions.

Is Little Caesars a Franchise?

YES!

Little Caesars is currently the third-largest carryout-only pizza chain in the United States and one of the most renowned franchises in the world today.

As a single store back then in metro Detroit in 1959 with Michael Ilitch Sr. and his wife Marian Ilitch as the founders.

Little Caesars opened its first franchise in 1962, with a total of 50 restaurants in the United States.

As of today, the franchise is present in Costa Rica, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, the Philippines, India, Jamaica, Singapore, Jordan, Bahrain, Turkey, Egypt, Australia, Barbados, Chile, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas and Saudi Arabia.

Little Caesars is currently owned by the Ilitch Holdings with David Scrivano as the President and CEO, and Ed Gleich as the CIO.

The franchise basically sells chicken wings, crazy bread, and pizzas.

How Much Does a Little Caesars Franchise Cost?

Little Caesars estimates that the start-up costs to own a franchise with them is between $193,050 to $619,500.

An aspiring franchisee also needs to have a net worth of $150,000, and at least $50,000 in cash with the ability to obtain financing to cover the remaining costs.

If you have plans of opening a Little Caesars franchise, you may want to consider these major fees and costs.

Little Caesars Initial Franchise Fee ($20,000)

The standard initial Little Caesars franchise fee is $20,000; however, the company tends to reduce this fee for already existing franchisees in certain circumstances.

For example:

If you are trying to open your first Little Caesars restaurant, you will pay an initial franchise fee of $20,000. Still, if you are an already existing franchisee trying to purchase an additional franchise under the same franchise number, you may be liable for a $5000 discount – leaving you with a $15,000 initial franchise fee.

Also, if you are an already existing franchisee signing a new franchise agreement when the original agreement has expired, you will be liable for a $15,000 initial Little Caesars franchise fee.

While for new franchisees looking to sign a new franchise agreement with a higher royalty rate than in the original agreement, with ownership still intact from the outset of the original agreement, will be liable for a $10,000 initial franchise fee.

It’s also important to note that this initial franchise fee is non-refundable. For new franchisees, there’s an option to pay a non-refundable $5000 initial franchise fee within 30 days after the company has approved your franchise.

The remainder of the fee can be paid when you sign the Little Caesars franchise agreement or when the company approves a site for your proposed restaurant.

For the United States military veterans, this initial franchise fee is reduced by $5,000 too.

Little Caesars will also give you a $5000 credit toward your initial purchases of equipment needed for your first restaurant from Blue Line.

But for service-disabled veterans, you will be given a Blue Line credit of $10,000.

Read Also: Waffle House Franchise Cost

Franchise Pre-Opening Purchases from Blue Line ($63,000 – $154,000)

For franchisees looking to open their new Little Caesars restaurant, in addition to the initial franchise fee, you are also required to purchase goods from Blue Line.

You should note that the payments on these items are non-refundable.

Little Caesars Vision System Annual Support Fee ($1500/year)

This fee is to be paid annually in January.

Note that this fee is not mandatory at the moment, but there’s no telling that the company won’t, at some point, decide to make it mandatory.

The fee costs $1500 yearly per restaurant that the Caesar Vision system has been installed.

Little Caesars Training Fee ($250)

This does not cost more than $250 per attendee for an initial Little Caesars franchisee training.

Territory Reservation Fee ($5000)

If you decide to sign a Territory Reservation Agreement with the company, you will be required to pay a Territory Reservation fee of $5000 per restaurant.

Little Caesars may choose to offer you a lesser amount, though, it all depends on them.

Royalty Fee ($100/week)

You choose to pay more than 6% of your gross sales weekly, or a $100 for each week as the royalty fee.

By gross sales, they mean:

The total revenue from the sale of products and services and all other income received by your restaurant. This includes revenues generated from selling products and services off-premises to customers, whether cash or credit.

Gross sales do not include refunds from customers, though, and a certain type of credits, sales taxes that are added to the selling price, and certain permitted discounts.

Little Caesars Franchise Relocation Fee ($2500)

Take note:

With Little Caesars, you can only choose to relocate your restaurant if they permit you to; and the new location must be within a one-mile radius of your previous location, with the new restaurant opening within 6 months of your previous location’s closure.

This relocation fee though, is refundable only if the company does not approve your request.

Little Caesar’s franchise cost for relocation is $2500, and the fee is to be paid after submission of your relocation request.

Read Also: Entrepreneurs Who Want to Open a Franchise

Little Caesars Franchise Cost for Renewal ($5000)

This fee is to be paid at the time of signing your Franchise Agreement and Renewal Addendum.

Liquidated Damages Fee for Failure to Comply with Post-Termination Obligations ($250/day)

This fee will be due for payment once incurred.

This fee arises when you fail to comply with the obligation to renew your Little Caesar franchise agreement on expiration or termination.

The company may withdraw up to $10,000 from your bank account on expiration or termination of your franchise agreement to cover potential liquidated damages.

This certain portion of the $10,000 will be refunded upon completion of the de-identification of the restaurant, that’s if there is any left.

And if the $10,000 withdrawn from you isn’t enough to satisfy your obligations, the company will invoice you for the remaining balance.

This is a brief overview of the top paying entry level IT jobs.

It’s no doubt that finding an entry-level IT job can be quite difficult for most, but today’s guide will show you exactly how to get an entry-level IT job, the best entry-level IT job for you, where to find entry-level IT jobs near you, and lots more.

Let’s get started.

Best Entry Level IT Jobs and Their Salary

Everyone wants a job that pays very well.

Finding a high paying entry level job, in general, can be quite difficult in most markets, but this is not the case for the tech industry.

Even outside the popular Silicon Valley, there are still tons of high paying entry level tech jobs available for you.

Here’s a list that can help you decide:

Data Analyst ($62,453 per year)

In our everyday business environment, DATA IS KING!

The more data a company collects on its customers, their preferences and buying habits, the more flexible and responsive they can get in responding to their changing needs.

Data analysts help to identify data that is to be collected and ensure that they are properly analyzed, compiled, and interpreted for the improvement of a company’s performance.

Data analysts earn an average of $62,453 yearly according to Glassdoor, but entry-level data analyst may be started at $61,000 annually based on your level of experience.

The major skills required of data analysts are:

Strong organizational skills

Knowledge on XML and JavaScript

Data mining and segmentation

Web Developer ($76,607 per year)

A web developer works with the nuts and bolts that go into creating a website for a company.

He either handles the frontend (user-side) or backend (admin section) of the website by writing codes that make the site to function the way the company wants it.

Web developers earn an average of $76,607 yearly, according to Indeed, but as a junior developer, you may be started with an annual salary of about $55,000.

The major skills required of a web developer are knowledge on JavaScript, CSS, PHP, Ruby on Rails and Python, etc.

It will also help you if you can get involved with coding boot camps around your community.

Web Designer ($50,029)

Please don’t ever confuse a web designer for a web developer!
