Who is Elon Musk?

Elon Reeve Musk is a South-African born American technological entrepreneur, investor, and engineer.

He was born on the 28th of June, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa.

At about the age of 10, Elon Musk developed an interest in computers, which was about the same time his parents got a divorce.

Musk taught himself different programming languages, and at the age of 12, he sold his first software – Blastar.

The source code of Musk’s game (Blastar) was published in a magazine in which he received $500 for it.

Elon Musk moved over to Canada at the age of 17 to study at Queen’s University, and also to avoid mandatory military service in his home country – South Africa.

Musk left Canada three years after (1992) to study business and physics at the University of Pennsylvania. He then headed over to Stanford University in California for a Ph.D. in Energy Physics.

Elon Musk dropped out of Stanford University just two days later to launch his first company – Zip2 Corporation in 1995.

Musk sold Zip2 Corporation in 1999 for $307 million in cash and $34 million in stock options… And with the cash he got from the sale, he launched his second company – X.com (an online financial service/payment company)

X.com evolved to become the PayPal we all know of today.

Elon Musk made his first billions when PayPal was acquired in October 2002 by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock. Although, he already owned 11% of PayPal stock before the sale.

Musk went on to launch his third company – SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corporation) in 2002… And by 2008, SpaceX was well established that NASA awarded the company the contract to handle the transportation of cargos for the International Space Station.

Elon Musk is currently the co-founder, CEO and product architect at Tesla Motors Incorporation which was launched in 2003, and is dedicated to producing affordable electric cars as well as battery products for the general public.

He’s also the co-founder of Neuralink, founder of The Boring Company, co-founder and initial co-chairman of OpenAI, and was ranked 21st on  Forbes list of the World’s Most Powerful People in December 2016.

How a Perfect Resume Should Look

Now, let’s talk a bit about what a perfect resume looks like.

Resumes are very essential to any job search, but let’s face it: creating a business development manager resume is not exactly anyone’s idea of a good time.

With so many conflicting pieces of advice as to how the perfect business resume should look like, you might feel like you don’t know where to start or what to do.

Here’s exactly what makes a resume perfect:

1. Design

Your resume should not be designed with excessively decorated templates.

Aim at leaving as much white space as possible, margins of at least 7 inches and a font size no smaller than 11pt.

2. Contact information

You shouldn’t make it impossible for recruiters to contact you with your business resume.

Place your contact information near the header in your resume.

3. Show off your strengths

Recruiters are very interested in knowing your strengths.

Don’t make them hunt for the most critical information on your business resume – include all your key soft and hard skills immediately below the header of the resume.

Use concrete data points or simple illustrations to quantify your level of skills. This provides recruiters with a wide scope and context of your work.

Also, don’t forget to highlight why you’re a good fit for the job.

4. List your working experience

This should include each company you’ve worked for, your job title, the period of time you worked there and important points that describe your key accomplishments and responsibilities.

This section should be at the utmost part of your resume, just below the header.

5. Educational background

The two best places to put your educational background section in your resume are:

  • Before your working experience section.
  • After your working experience section.

Let me explain:

If you’ve just graduated, then consider placing your education background section before your working experience section.

This is because, as a recent graduate, you probably have more educational background than work experience.

And seeing that the top third section of your resume is prime real estate for showing off your major accomplishments, it is best you have your educational background section come first.

Also, if you’re a professional who recently went back to school to get a new degree, you may also want to consider placing your educational section first before your working experience. This is especially important if the new degree is relevant to the work which you are applying for.

But for a seasoned professional, it’s best you place your working experience section before your educational background section.

6. Achievements & Certifications

This is a very important section of every resume.

Many job openings require seeing a form of certification or degree, so make sure you list yours out clearly.

7. Keep it concise

The best resumes are limited to 1-2 pages at the most.

For me, I’d stick to a simple one-page resume.

So, how can we relate all these business development resume traits to the Elon Musk resume template?
